Swimming Upstream Label: Republic Records About the Album The Russian/Puerto Rican front man of RA takes his examination of the human condition far beyond his band's music. Completing a pilgrimage to India, the singer emerged from an ashram as Sahaj Ticotin, in homage to his study of Eastern philosophy. With DUALITY (the band's second album), RA redefines their position in the nu metal landscape as a melodic, hard-rock force. Much closer kin to Alter Bridge than, say, Disturbed, RA employs harmony-laden vocals, with Sahaj sounding hauntingly close at times to Sting, especially on the single-worthy "I Lost Everything Today." That distinct vocal likeness gets put to good use on a faithful, rocked-out cover of the Police classic, "Every Little Thing She Does Is Magic," with the signature piano figure reproduced on Ben Carroll's guitar. RA's skilled instrumentalists now include 40 Ft. Ringo/Sugarbelly bassist P.J. Farley and new drummer Andy Ryan. Steadily evolving into its own unique identity, RA appears as a band on the rise with DUALITY. About the Artist Ra is the brainchild of vocalist/multi-instrumentalist/producer Sahaj. It's also the name of the ancient Egyptian sun god. But there was a time when the sun almost didn't come up for Ra. Boston's Sahaj had been working on Ra in one form or another for five years. The group's lineup solidified early in 2002, when Sahaj and New Yorker Skoota Warner (drums) were joined by Beantown boys Ben Carroll (guitar) and Sean Corcoran (bass). Sahaj was about ready to give up and call it quits if something didn't break soon. That break occurred when the band played the 2002 NEMO festival in Boston. Within a month, Ra was receiving major airplay. Heavy rotation of Ra's single at one of Boston's top radio stations attracted Universal Records' attention. Ra's debut, From One, was released later in 2002. The album landed on both the Billboard 200 and Heatseekers charts. |
