Warriors of Iron and Rust (remake) label: Earache There are some instances where a lineup change does little to affect a band's style or direction. On the other hand, new band members can completely change a band's sound, almost to the point where a listener familiar with their style might not even recognize them. This is most certainly the case with Usurper and their new Earache release, Cryptobeast. With a new vocalist and former drumming returning to the fold, this is one band whose sound has become more refined and sadly, a little less unique. Overall, Cryptobeast is as good as anything Usurper has done in the past. That being said, however, as stubborn as I am, I was hoping for more of the same. In the past, Usurper was certainly not original, but one of the few bands that still held the old-school metal flag high, with a sound very reminiscent of Celtic Frost. With their thick, warm guitar tones and grunty Tom G.Warrior vocals, Usurper was the closest thing to the Morbid Tales sound one could find. With Cryptobeast, the band finds itself cleaning up its act, speeding up, and finding itself heavier and more ferocious. Along with these changes, I also find them to be a bit more generic and lacking in character, but overall still an excellent band. From the first tune, "The Bones Of My Enemies", one can sense the changes that have occured. Speedy, thrashy, and anthemic, this is probably the best tune on the disc, along with the Manowar-turned death metal-ish "Kill For Metal". New singer Danny Lawson has a decent death metal voice, with surprising clarity. He lacks much of the character and subtle campiness of former singer General Diabolical Slaughter, whose Tom G.Warrior-inspired grunts were one of the reasons Usurper were so fun on past efforts like Twilight Dominion and Skeletal Season. Returning drummer Joe Schaefer, who was actually on Usurper's first two albums, really seems to propel the rest of the band, with some truly excellent and tight playing. His fills and double bass work are top-notch, and his overall influence is quite significant. The band as a whole seems much tighter, as the sometimes sloppy black metal influence of past albums is barely noticeable, replaced by a more streamlined thrash and death metal feel. Neil Kernon, who was behind the boards on Usurper's last album, Twilight Dominion, returns on Cryptobeast, and his production is once again flawless. The sound is a bit different, with cleaner, sharper guitar tones and a tighter drum sound. The bass guitar is a bit lower in the mix, but it still has a strong presence. The vocals are particularly well-mixed, and along with Lawson's strong delivery, they are still quite easily discernible, even in their gruffness. Overall, Cryptobeast is a solid album from a great American band. There are some excellent tunes ("The Bones Of My Enemies", "Kill For Metal", "Return Of The Werewolf", "Cryptobeast"), but some rather uninteresting ones as well ("Reptilian", "Wrath Of God", "Conquest Of The Grotesque"). I miss the Celtic Frost-isms of their past, but I will just have to get over it. Danny Lawson is a solid vocal replacement, and the band's thrashier sound is still different from most of the death metal out there. For those who were used to the old Usurper sound, be prepared: There's a little change in store for you...but I think you'll like it. |
