Wow, I don't really know a damn thing about this band other than the fact that they're Swedish, but I'm pretty intrigued. Skymning take what Slipknot actually succeeds at musically and extends it onward to actually feel genuine and unique. With a general tone similar to old school Swedish bands, what comes across is a bit of an industrial influence crossed with straightforward death metal. It's difficult to explain, but man, whatever it is, it's goddamned heavy.

There really isn't a lot going on musically, however, the production really works wonders for Skymning, turning what might've been a boring rhythm-reliant bashfest into something innovative. There's a lot of ringing riffs, pick-scrapes, feedback, harmonics, and even groovy bass lines. Overall it's a really noisy album, but every instruments' role is so clearly defined that you can't help but feel a bit of their infectious sound. The vocals, sounding a bit like Johan Liiva (Arch Enemy, Nonexist, Hearse), could be compared to a deeper yell, sort of a step between a growl and a yell - leaving the lyrics actually somewhat intelligible.

I'm shocked at what I'm hearing. Skymning truly play a unique style of metal that's going to garner just as much criticism as it will praise. It's engrossing and completely different from anything I've ever heard - I'm astonished. Typically I shutter when I read those lines in a review as I usually expect all sorts of exotic instrumentation and backup choirs. Skymning avoid all that on Machina Genova, playing some of the heaviest and, at times like on "Scalpleech", completely spaced out shit.

Please though, don't let the Slipknot comparison turn you away. I assure you, it's so much more than that. It's primarily just the vocals and production. As much shit as most bands get for combining industrial music with metal, this is an album that makes up for all the mediocre and poorly planned albums by bands attempting a similar style. Don't hesitate for a moment to pick this up if you're into dark shit that's groovy, direct, and hard hitting. Although it may not be a perfect release, it's definitely a step in the right direction.
