For The Old Dead Tree is a band with an own sound you immediately recognize out of thousands, a style that will appeal especially to fans of Anathema, Opeth and Katatonia. But in principle it is recommended to every metal fan with a heart for depth, melancholy and fabulous melodies. The band just perfected, developed and deepened its own style on this sophomore record. This makes that 'The Perpetual Motion' needs a few more spins before all this beauty is revealed, but aren't that the best records? The album starts with the independent and fairly familiar sounding 'Out Of Breath'. Initially it seems like Vinny Cavanagh (Anathema) is singing here, but no, at the sound of the first grunt it is clear we are dealing with the mighty Manuel Munoz behind the microphone. Just as easy as ever, he switches from sensitive vocals to harsh, brutal variations and that remains a strong trump for the band. Next songs are bundled in three chapters and have a rather thematic texture. Regularly, gentle and melancholic guitar solos loom up in the midst of atmospheric parts and also vocal-wise they go to the limits, just listen to 'Unrelenting' with its rich vocal palette. The songs pass into each other to emphasize their filmic character and it seems you are listening to a whole. '1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8' based on contemplative bass lines, has a slightly more simple structure and the vocal lines of 'Even If' are catchy too. The album occludes with the lovely instrumental 'This Is No Farewell'. With its hope-giving title it promises us all the best for the future.

With 'The Perpetual Motion', it is proven once more that The Old Dead Tree has talent to become a huge band. And they are working on it. Soon they will go on tour with Epica.
