Tracklist: 1.Intro 2.Blustud 3.Vorpal 4.Diamond 5.Muertos 6.Lifeitis 7.Sickened 8.Cyberian Dance 9.Wrathorn Label: Adipocere Playing time: 40:23 line-up: - Tomasz Kilinski (guitares, chant) - Andrzej Selwon (guitares) - Mariusz Kozon (claviers) - Sebastian Adas (basse) - Grzegorz Golianek (batterie) Naumachia are for fans of melodic, blackened metal with their heavy use of keys and mid range rasping vocals, they have a good use of harmonies and there is definitely a progressive feel to their style as well. ‘Blustud’ changes the pace suddenly after the ‘intro’ with all the separate layers intertwining well with each other. Moving through the songs we can pick up comparisons to Amorphis, In Flames and Arcturus, with little moments sounding like Samael, mainly with the use of keyboard breaks. A few parts are a touch too cheesy or light for personal taste, ‘Diamond’ for example goes off on a tangent I’m not too keen on, but then has a quality faster ending. A fan of this style, like a heavier Iron Maiden, would like Naumachia as their sounds are laden with traditional heavy metal style riffs and sections. A well produced and technically gifted band who definitely have a lot to offer. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- I think my favourite part of metal is when you think you know what’s going on, or what’s to come, and it turns round and boots you in the "haw maws". I’ve never heard of Naumachia before this time, and I’m afraid to say I immediately applied the stereotypes I hate so much in music these days. So these guys are from Poland, have a weird name and mystical artwork, and have recorded with producers involved with Vader, Behemoth and Decapitated – brutal Death Metal it is then...wrong! I couldn’t have been more wrong! Naumachia are a 6 piece melodic death outfit, and have all the trademarks of such a genre (sorry guys, I’m labelling you again), grandiose keyboards, twin guitars, a solid rhythm section, and vocals you can pronounce! But there’s something about this album that really grabbed me on a couple of spins, and it’s hard to put your finger on. Naumachia in true style warm us up with an inventively melodic keyboard intro, which gives the listener a flavour of the mood and atmosphere to follow. Opener "Blustud" kicks in with style, and sets the pace for most of this record, in a little more than mid-paced fashion, and some catchy-ass riffing that hooks from the first chorus – I had to skip back this track before I could move on any further. Not that I like labelling or stereotyping bands (yeah right), I can’t help but think back to Skyfire and their Timeless Departure album. If this rings a bell, the pace and feel are much the same, but again, Naumachia seem to have something else. In tandem with the keys from the intro, and throughout the album, the vocals of Yarpen bring instant images of a rougher side to Shagrath around Enthrone Darkness Triumphant time, in fact this has to be a big influence on these guys. And just in case you thought these guys were denying their Polish route to brutality, drummer Grzegorz demonstrates that not only is he a rock solid rhythm section, but blasts us all the way to hell and back on highlight tracks "Diamond" and "Siberian Dance". I’m telling you, if you’re a fan of Norther, or anything I’ve mentioned before, this is for you! But what sets these guys apart from their peers, is that they aren’t hell bent on playing the fastest solo trade off, or have a classical outro that lasts half the length of the song – Naumachia have created a simpler but far deadlier weapon. Imagine the Jedi light sabre battle in Star Wars Episode II, I mean yeah, it looks good, and is quite impressive at first, but to be honest gives me a fucking headache. Now think of Obi Wan and Vader in Episode IV, so it’s a lot simpler, but it entertained you for a hell of a lot longer! To pick particular songs to map this album out for the listener is a difficult task, as each contains so many little gems, all well structured and crafted. Melancholic spiralling guitars, enchanting symphonic soundscapes, and a power to make you feel the darker side of metal, but also bang your head in a proud reverence – I’ve still got that grin on my mug that says, hell yeah! Oh, and did I mention the rather out of place, but highly entertaining hidden cover of "Eye of the Tiger" – nice one! Now can it be that good I hear you ask, lets be honest, "Wrathorn" is not perfect, but if they can make this even better, then I’ll be first in line, and hope that their penchant for line-up changes doesn’t hinder their power to forge steel in the future. After all of this, do I know what Naumachia means – no! I don’t even know if it’s Polish, but if I was to hazard a guess, I’d say it meant Awesome! |
