Arriving with surprisingly little fanfare for a band of their caliber, Italy's reigning (well in my humble opinion at least!) Folk/Power Metal Lords ELVENKING (Damnagoras/vox, Aydan/guitars and backing vox, Gorlan/bass, Elyghen/violins and keyboards, and Zender/drums) have returned with album number three "The Winter Wake", adding yet another gleaming musical gem into the crown of a catalogue which only seems to get better with each new chapter. One listen to this humble little masterpiece and I can pretty much guarantee you'll be going "RHAPSODY who???".

Seriously though, all good-natured jabs aside (I'd hate for Luca Turilli to don a suit of gleaming mail and saddle up his steed on a quest for my head!) this is indeed a class act in every sense of the term. My first exposure to ELVENKING came about two years ago via a soundbite from The End Records Distro website from their debut release, "Heathenreel" (2001). I immediately found myself quite taken with the band's uniquely original combination of classic, STRATOVARIUS/SONATA ARCTICA/RHAPSODY-esque bombastic "Epic" Power Metal with what was then the burdgeoning Folk/Viking sonic movement typified most obviously through the work of acts such as FINNTROLL and ENSIFERUM amongst others. Without further ado I sought out a copy of both "Heathenreel", and it's impressive 2003 followup "Wyrd". In the case of ELVENKING, while the engine behind the music is undoubtedly based in very driving, virtuoso Power Metal with all of the MALMSTEENish leadwork/keyboard flourishes, big choral arrangements, and vocal acrobatics one would expect from said subgenre, the overall song constructs themselves are based in a very Folk-heavy context that utilizes a stunning array of traditional instrumentation (violins and fiddles) to stirring, thunder-through-the-mead-hall-rafters effect. It is a combination that works very well indeed.

Such musical prowess is more than intact on ELVENKING's latest effort. With "The Winter Wake", it also becomes apparent by the time the first half of the album has finished that this is an act who have learned a great deal about the importance of writing tighter song constructs to boot. One of my only complaints about some of the material on earlier releases (most noticeably on "Heathenreel") was the seeming desire of the band to throw everything but the proverbial kitchen sink into their musical wizard's cauldron. A tendency to try too hard to cram as many different riffs, leads, and hooks into each track to the point where frankly, as impressive as those tracks were on a strictly musical level... any sense of memorable impact was sorely diminished by the presence of too many extraneous elements at play. It was a case of far too many good ideas and not enough discipline to know how to arrange them properly. In short; they would have to trim the fat if ELVENKING's musical platter was to made more palatable. While "Wyrd" certainly demonstrated some much-needed effort in this department it is here on "The Winter Wake" that ELVENKING have truly come into their own as songwriters. From the majestic opening chords of "Trows Kind" with its infectious melody and rousing chorus, through to the epic "Swallowtail" and the title track to the driving "March Of Fools" with its heroic central violin riff, ELVENKING prove that they have indeed evolved into a tight and focused act more than capable of delivering the goods! Personal faves would have to include the aforementioned opening salvo, as well as ballad "On The Morning Dew", the riff-heavy "Devil's Carriage", and the inspring "Rouse Your Dream". Truly all the tracks here are just great though, the album flowing together wonderfully from start to finish with more than enough hook, epic choruses, and fist-pumping Metal glory throughout to cause one to "heed the call"! Add to this a sterling Finnvox Studios production job, and a wicked cover of the old SKYCLAD fave "Penny Dreadul" and you have a definite winner on your hands.

So there you have it. If top-notch Euro-style Folk/Power Metal is your particular sorcerer's bag of tricks then I daresay you can do no better at present than to pick up a copy of ELVENKING's "The Winter Wake". This is Metal at its most stirring, musically uplifting, raise-your-swords-to-the-wind best as only our brethren from the other side of the pond can deliver. Far from the winter of their career, ELVENKING are a long way away from anything resembling a wake.
