QUOTE | Fusing rock, doom, and metal, Pittsburgh's PENANCE have, over the course of their 10+ year career, become one of the most revered acts within the scene that spawned TROUBLE, THE OBSESSED, SLEEP and a myriad of 70's influenced hard rock bands. Starting with their "Living Truth" demo released in 1990, PENANCE quickly gained the respect of such bands as CATHEDRAL, which led to drummer Mike Smail playing on CATHEDRAL's "Forest of Equilibrium" debut. After a European tour alongside CATHEDRAL and SLEEP, PENANCE released their debut CD "The Road Less Traveled" on CATHEDRAL frontman Lee Dorrian's Rise Above Records in 1992. This garnered enough interest worldwide to pave the way for a deal with Century Media, who released PENANCE's sophomore disc "Parallel Corners" in 1994. "Parallel Corners" was praised by Martin Popoff in "The Guide to Heavy Metal" as one of the five top "post-Sabbath" albums ever released.

I am pretty sure that most Doom metal fans if not all, have heard of Penance. Parallel Corners is the second release from the Doom veterans and is often considered their crowning acheivement, and for good reason.
I have recenly been turned onto this band for their awesome guitar riffs and tone, most notably the tracks "Born to Suffer" and "Words to Live By". They have suffered quite a bit of line up changes throughout their career as well. Before being signed, they released teir demo and somehow the line up of Cathedral, my personal favorite of the Doom scene, got a hold of it. They were so intrigued that they invited the drummer to play for their first cd, Forest of Equilibrium. Penance was later signed to Rise Above records and released this monster of a cd in 1994.
The cd has a lot of great things to offer as far as headbanging material and more melodic guitar focused stuff. "Destroyed By One" is an excellent offering and tribute to those who came before them. There are really no negatives about the album, though it is hard for me to give a cd a 6.6.6. because I do not want to lead people into the wrong direction. To some, this might drag on alot more than what is needed, whih some of it does have a tendency to drag for a little, but that is not necessarily a bad thing. While listening to this cd, I noticed that there was quite a simialarity between the track "Crosses" and Cathedral's "Midnight Mountain" as far as modern wise. "Crosses" is probably my favoroite track on the cd as well.
It is a bummer that their original line up has deteriorated and we will most likely never see a reunion. To sum it all: Penance is a true outstanding effort that will remain a genre favorite to a lot of people. |
