Thanks to KillerRips and other friends ![]() A stellar, slick and melodic follow up to "Face the Music", September 22, 2006 Reviewer: Wayne Klein "wtdk" (Fairfield, CA United States) Written and recorded in record time after the US tour for "Face the Music" "A New World Record" cemented ELO's reputation as making great records. Recorded in Germany (again)the album featured 8 Lynne originals and a remake "Do Ya" his tune from his days in The Move (which also became a hit single). This reissue sounds terrific (particularly when compared to the original CD release). There's sharper detail throughout the CD. The bonus tracks are a great addition. The best bonus track is the rocking "Surrender" which should have been on the album (although it's lack of orchestral overdubs would have made it stand out a bit). It's a terrific slice of rock that wouldn't have sounded out of place on The Move's last album. We also get rough instrumental mixes of "Tightrope", "Above the Clouds", "So Fine" and "Telephone Line". Additionally we get an alternate version of "Telephone Line" (which became the band's biggest single to date world wide with a UK Gold record the result)with a different vocal take (and without the filter effect at the beginning where it sounds Lynne is singing over the phone). The keyboards are a bit more prominent here as are the backing vocals while the orchestration is a bit further back in the mix (Bevan's drums also sound a bit distorted and fuller here). We get liner notes on the making of the album how it charted and Lynne briefly commenting on the various songs on the album. This is a terrific reissue that fans have been waiting for. The only thing missing is a replica of the original embossed sleeve (they could have done that to the cover artwork). ![]() Review by Bruce Eder ... [A New World Record was the expanded ELO reissue that this reviewer was really waiting on, from the moment it was announced in the winter of 2005/2006 through its non-delivery on its original release date, right to its arrival in the late summer of 2006. Of all the ELO albums that deserved a Mobile Fidelity-style audiophile treatment (and never got it), this was the one, if only because it was the group's most finely realized album, their Revolver or Sgt. Pepper. So here it is, and it sounds magnificent, although it's something of a tribute to the material here that some of the interim remasterings of the material on it, as part of anthologies such as the Flashback triple-CD set, were pretty damn good too -- the upgraded sound and the volume pushed harder (like to the limit) has brought out the full majesty of the arrangement used on "Do Ya" and imparted greater impact to songs such as "Telephone Line" and "Livin' Thing." And then there are the outtakes -- "Telephone Line" with an alternate vocal track is intriguing, but the real treat is "Surrender," a stunning hook-laden piece of pop/rock that ought to have been a single (and surely would have been a hit); its presence alone would justify buying this CD, and if it were the only new element here, it would have made the effort behind this release worthwhile. And instrumental mixes of "Tightope," "Above the Clouds," "So Fine," and "Telephone Line" aren't just icing on the cake -- they're practically a whole extra cake, making this one very full musical meal, even for those who don't love the original album the way this reviewer does. The annotation isn't quite as thorough as what has appeared in other reissues in this series, but that's the only place where this CD lags even a little bit, in terms of telling about each song.] ![]() |
