thanks to KillerRipps and all friends also Product Description 2 CD set. Days Of Future Passed is the Moody Blues' true contribution to rock history and the most cohesive integration of rock songs with orchestral music ever produced. Asked to create a rock reworking of Dvorak's New World Symphony, the Moodies instead wrote their own symphony, a song cycle that describes the emotions that accompany each part of the day, from dawn ('Dawn Is A Feeling') to night (the classic 'Nights In White Satin'). The songs are connected by lush orchestral passages in which the basic musical themes are reworked... Review by Bruce Eder Sometimes names and packages are deceptive. Nominally, this release is a Universal "deluxe edition," presumably along similar lines to editions of key albums by Cream, Lynyrd Skynyrd, and other bands like that. But in spirit and aspects of its content, it's actually quite a bit more ambitious, and almost closer to the 30th anniversary edition of Bruce Springsteen's Born to Run. Before going any further, it should be stated that the 1997-vintage remasterings of the Moody Blues' "classic seven" albums, including Days of Future Passed, were just fine. They were a significant improvement over the original late-'80s CD releases from Polygram, which were rushed and, in some instances, badly flawed, and they're rich and rewarding and will continue to please listeners for years to come. That said, midway through listening to the CD layer of this dual-layer (CD/SACD) double-disc "deluxe edition" of Days of Future Passed, this reviewer found himself amazed by what he was hearing, off of an album that he's known intimately for over 35 years. The CD layer on disc one, which presents the original album in its original mix, de-noised and restored, offers playing in some spots that this reviewer never heard before, and nuances elsewhere that were scarcely more than hinted at in the various incarnations of the album up to now -- and not just nuances by the band, but bowings by the orchestra's string section that stand out in relief that were never clearly represented before. And the voices -- they're now in the room with you, they're so close. And the SACD layer on the same disc, in 5.1 Surround Sound, is yet another listening matter entirely, literally putting you right in the middle of the band and also allowing you to hear each instrumental and vocal part separately if one so desires, as though it were coming from a separate corner of the room, with the complete, centered mix comprising a well-nigh perfect representation of the finished album; and, not surprisingly, the entire content of this release was prepared under the supervision of bandmembers Justin Hayward and John Lodge. ... In other words, musically it all works and is still light years ahead of so much out in the world now. As far as rock and roll artists, The Moody Blues have done music that is fantastic. As a former schooled musician who was a published writer of many songs and been on records ( pre -CD), I have great admiration for the music on the CD. As a former radio air talent and engineer, I feel the mastering could have been a little better ( those old 33 and 1/3 mobile fidelity albums if I recall correctly were awesome) because the CD it is hotter but losses some full range DB. But the music is so good. It all comes down to the songs and the melody for me and this is one of the greatest albums done in rock and roll between the 1950's through to today.......including anything my beloved Beatles ever did. In fact , the classic 7 Moody Blues albums are all of amazing music quality. This being in the top 2 albums for this great band through their 43 year history 1964 to 2006 ( the are in their 43rd year as a band). Perhaps the remaining Moody Blues would get inspiration to do a concept album once again with all new studio music and an orchestra. Similiar to this great work. Their audience is people like me. Forget about doing singles for hits or a new audience, those days are over for sure. The music on the classic 7 albums are where the hearts of die hard fans happens to be. That is why these same classic 7 albums still sell. It would be a dream for fans if , just in the studio, the remaining members asked Mike Pinder, Denny Laine and Ray Thomas to contribute and do a studio album with the 6 of them with an orchestra and forget about commercialism. Do it to break ground like this album. It is one of the best in the history of rock and roll and beyond. The BBC radio sessions are awesome. All the good radio " live " type tracks should be released. Disc two is the reason why I got this item. It is well worth it. As a fan , out-takes of any type are welcome. I bet there are more rare gems out there beyond what has come out on these first 5 CD's and the next 2 classic 7 CD's. They should all be released. Fans will buy the music. This has the best packaging of all the 5 recent releases. Nice job. For some reason, I cannot get two of five of these 5.1 Surround Sound mixes to work in my car CD player. It could be the quality of the XD 6210 CD receiver by Dual. Overall, this is FIVE stars. Buy it and keep on thinking free. |
