With renewed vigor and a fiery new frontman, FINNTROLL crawl up from their clammy cavern clutching their fifth full-length, Ur Jordens Djup. After many nights of drunken debauchery at Sonic Pump studios, where they certainly overstayed their welcome, the Finnish sextet is proud to bring you another fine example of their trademark blackened pagan folk metal. Under the guidance of producer extraordinaire Nino Laurenne, who has similarly assisted goth legends Nightwish and Amorphis, FINNTROLL have crafted their most consistent concoction of cavernous chaos yet. The effort is drenched in atmosphere, guitarists Skrymer and Routa creating a maelstrom of metal mayhem amidst the pull and sway of pagan polka. Trollhorn (keyboards) channels the jubilant troll within to give Ur Jordens Djup its celebratory and unmistakably mythological charm.

How FINNTROLL arrived at their mind-bending mix of metal humppa we will never know, but we do know their origin stems back to 1998, when the group turned heads with their commanding introductory demo, Rivfader. Its 21 minutes of unique folk metal created a whirlwind of interest from listeners and labels alike. Spinefarm Records released their first three full-lengths, reaching the Finnish top 20 first with Jaktens Tid, FINNTROLL’s second album. A killer live act, the band soon garnered spots in Europe’s most prestigious open-air festivals, Tuska 2003 and Sweden Rock among them.

2004’s Nattfodd saw the band reach new heights with their Century Media debut, successfully combining the pummeling, more rhythmic pace of earlier albums with the acoustic ambience of more recent recordings to create a deceivingly accessible but brutal sound. Imagine a bunch of hedonistic black metallers crashing a polka party and you have the right idea. FINNTROLL again cemented their reputation as a premiere live act when they played both Finland’s Sauna Open Air and Holland’s Waldrock festival later that year with bands like Children of Bodom, Nightwish, Exodus, and Nevermore.

With former vocalist Wilska’s departure in 2006, the remaining members scoured their native homeland for a suitable replacement, only to stumble upon the like-minded and equally inebriated Vreth. After a few pints, a number of wild practice sessions, and a covert initiation rite, FINNTROLL welcomed Vreth with open arms. His first test was Germany’s Wacken Open Air festival last August, a successful jaunt to say the least, as not one of the 40,000 poor souls in attendance was left unmolested and unaffected by FINNTROLL and their definitive brand of hellish humppa. The group had previously toured the U.S. with Sodom that January, and they are looking forward to returning to American shores later this fall. With 11 new tracks from Ur Jordens Djup in hand, FINNTROLL should have no problem entertaining audiences in the new year.

Apparently hungry for more humppa, Germany invited the bloodthirsty band to its 10th anniversary edition of the Summer Breeze festival later this year, when the group will join labelmates Immolation and Fear My Thoughts in cooperative carnage. Never ones to deny the world of their compelling mix of savage melody, FINNTROLL are determined to pillage an unsuspecting city near you. With Ur Jordens Djup in their arsenal, the destruction shouldn’t take long.
