The Young Gods are minimalist architects bootlegers. Recovering big budget energy (Tchaikowsky, Mozart, Madonna, Prince, Billy Idol, Van Halen...) low budget energy (punk, trash, hardcore, experimental...) and urban sonorities into 2-3 seconds samplings in order to retrain them. Speed, movent, balance are readjusted to build a new sonic architecture. The Young Gods are swiss, but they consider themselves europeans. Their influences are the old world culture: the Koln cathedrale for example... and the 5 elements: Fire, Water, Gaz, Sound & Sex. (taken from the first biography) Swiss electro-noise terrorists the Young Gods traced their origins back to 1982, when Geneva-based frontman Franz Treichler, increasingly bored with his then-current new wave band, began experimenting with a small sampler. Influenced as well by the visceral power of punk and the grand drama of classical music, he began creating abrasive guitar and drum loops, and with sampler Cesare Pizzi and percussionist Frank Bagnoud, founded the Young Gods in 1985; named in an honor of a Swans composition, the trio debuted a year later with "Envoyé!," a brief, blistering single distilling their assaultive sound to its core. Produced by Swan Roli Mosimann, their self-titled debut LP followed in 1987, and was named Album of the Year by the British music weekly Melody Maker; by the time of the follow-up, 1989's L'Eau Rouge, drummer Use Heistand had replaced Bagnoud, and with the release of 1991's The Young Gods Play Kurt Weill, Pizzi was gone in favor of sampler Alain Monod. T.V. Sky followed in 1992, while 1995's Only Heaven flirted with ambient textures; two years later, the Young Gods (minus Heistand and with new drummer Bernard Trontin) returned with Heaven Deconstruction. (Jason Ankeny, AMG) The missing link between Suicide and Nine Inch Nails, Swiss noise niks The Young Gods were one of the most revolutionary and forward thinking rock bands of the 80s. This compilation (with a second cd of remixes) is a greatest hits of sort, highlighting 20 years of sonic adventurism. Keen adopters of sampling technology, the YGs early - and most influential - work is dark, dingy and mechanical. Tracks like "Fais La Mouette" sound like a form of brutalist hip hop/rock - the twisted alter ego of Run DMC and Aerosmith's "Walk This Way". A desire to explore new ideas seems to be at the heart of the band, they went on to release a CD of Kurt Weil songs and toyed witha more ambient sound on albums like Only Heaven. As a result there's more variety on this collection than you might expect. The Young Gods are a band that needed to exist; making XXY a recommended purchase for any student of rock's outer fringes.
