I first got news of this band when it was originally announced that Chity Somapala would be handling vocals on this one. Not too long after that original announcement a statement came out saying Chity was out of the band, and singer Steffen Brunner was taking his place. Powerworld has a lineup thats no stranger to the music scene with Nils Neumann (Freedom Call), Jürgen Lucas (At Vance), and Barish Kepic (Ex Jaded Heart). When news got out that Barish Kepic had hopped on board I was was really excited as Barish's playing on Jaded Hearts "Helluva Time" CD catapulted him into one of my all time favorite Hard Rock players. There are 12 tracks found here starting off with "The Dark" a great symphonic intro that kicks into "Creatures" a great riff ladden uptempo tune. The rest of the disc is filled with a versatile arrangement of tempos, and melodies, and topped off with a fantastic production. Something I took by surprise was that the band decided to do a cover of Cutting Crew's "Died In Your Arms". I gotta say that its a pretty interesting cover, although I prefer Barish's cover of Anastacia's "Paid My Dues" on the Jaded Heart "Helluva Time" CD. I really love Kepics guitar playing on this which is no surprise givin' what I said above. If I was to base this CD on his guitar playing alone it would be a 10, but what I think gives this review a 7 rather than an 8 or 9 in score is the melodies by Steffen Brunner. Its not the Steffen is bad, but some of the melodies he sings don't really flow all that great with the music, and it really keeps these songs from shining through at times. Don't let that fool you though as there are some big winners on here with my favorites being "I Reach The Light", and "Breaking the Silence" where the riffs are killer, and the vocals flow perfectly. If you like your Metal with melodic vocals, and mixed with a Hard Rock vibe, than I would definately recommend this CD. The band has all the potential in the world, and I'm really looking forward to what they do from here on out. Definately give them a chance! |
