It's been almost 14 years now since the Classical Guitars Duo Henryk Alber - Janusz Strobel turned duo on the Polish jazz scene. That was the time when the world was dominated by powerful rock, and jazz itself was just stepping into its loud, "electric" period. The Duo's delicate, airy music became a kind of remedy for the total noise of the jazz and pop scenes of that time. For all those years, the Duo remained faithful to their fascinations with Latin music - especially Brazilian samba and bossa nova - jazz and classical guitar music. Even today the music of the two is inspired by creations of Luis Bonfa, Joao Gilberto, A.C. Jobim, Charlie Byrd, Wes Montgomery and Adderley for one thing, and by classical virtuosity of Laurindo Almeida or Narciso Yepes for another. The years of experience, hundreds of concerts in this country and abroad and continuous work resulted in that the present repertoire of the two musicians is based mainly on their originals. This tendency will be clearly illustrated by this record, which contains only two alien titles: "Mambo'68" by Errol Garner and A.C. Jobim's "How Insensitive". The music of the Duo is always imbued with the atmosphere evoked by "everlasting" tastes of the guitarists. "The Afternoon Nap", the ballad by H. Alber, is penetrated with a dreamy mood of quiet nostalgia, while other, more dynamic pieces are dominated by jazzy feeling. The composers very often reveal their inclination for using odd meters, e.g. 5/4 in "After Five", 6/8 in "Amidst Important Dates". All selections, however, have one thing in com-mon, that is virtuosity, which is not a sheer parade of technique but it serves the superior aim: creating unique music, atmosphere and mood.
