Hopelessly infested with an endless desire to translate the abstract into discernible music, Dean De Benedictis, aka Surface 10 (also known as Surface 10 Activity) keeps his head submerged in the 'techo-logical' plasma pool while being drenched in a virtual stigmata of echoes from his vintage music interests and tendencies towards their homage. There is a lot of music out there labelled "ambient", "techno" and so on. Here, with "Surface 10", Dean De Benedictis has given us music that blurs category and defies pigeonholing. The nine pieces on the album show us what a gifted composer can do with electronic music. The sounds are neither metronomic disco nor shapeless fluff. It is synthesized magic and soundscapes that give the mind keys to wander unexplored worlds. Extremely cinemagraphic, Surface 10 unleashes deep emotions and feelings of peace. Sometimes the music seems to hover over a beautiful space and then it turns a corner, starts walking with a new found strength and attitude. Surface 10 is real electronic music with the emphasis on the music. Like predecessors Tangerine Dream and Vangelis, Surface 10 knows how to use the wide scope and precision of a synthetic orchestra to take us to places we've never dreamed of. ~ by J.
