betts at his best, May 6, 2007
By r.j. zurek (Cape Coral, FL United States)

Any fan of Dickie Betts can expect surprises. Early on with the Allman Brothers, he stunned rock critics with the adventerous "In Memory of Elizabeth Reed", added some country flavor to the blues-based brew with "Blue Sky" and "Ramblin' Man", and proved to be one of the premier guitarists who was also a strong singer.

"Collectors # 1" is unlike anything Betts has attempted before. In this all acoustic outing, Betts has chosen to explore every genre he has contributed to over a forty year career. Betts is the only living musician who can handle blues , rock, country, jazz- and now Gaelic- and make it all his own.

"Beyond the Pale" is the most unusual instrumental Betts has ever written, and it ranks with his best. Dickie states a very Irish/Scottish melody with flute, violin and nylon string guitar (a friend commented he thought of "Braveheart" upon hearing it for the first time). Just when you settle in with this new sound, Betts jumps into Billy Shaver's "Georgia On a Fast Train". Again, all soloists shine.

"One Stop Be-bop" is a jazz tribute to Charlie Parker, while "The Preacher" is a Horace Silver composition with a playful melody. Blues is covered with "Steady Rollin' Man" , "Change My Way of Livin'" and "Willy and Po' Bob".

Betts shares guitar duties with Dan Toler, one of the underrated players in rock (that's his killer solo on Gregg Allman's "I'm No Angel" ), and Dave Liles, Bett's mentor from Florida. Kris Jensen doubles on sax and flute, while T.C. Carr, another Florida native, plays some of the best harp in the world today.

If you love good music and have eclectic taste, this cd is for you.
