SPOILER (О ней) | QUOTE | Yael Kraus is a performing singer, who was born in Israel and grew up in a flourishing and encouraging art environment. Her mother is a painter; father is a musician, and her uncle, Shmulik Kraus, is a successful known performer. Due to Kraus’s early exposure to the arts, she managed to find her own distinctive voice and performance style, which got the recognition of its uniqueness in the Israeli music scenery.
At 14 years of age, Kraus moved to Tel-Aviv with her mother, Judy Kraus, and her mother’s partner, the actor Yair (Koya) Rubin. At 18 years of age, Kraus went to study music at the "Rimon School of Jazz and Contemporary Music" for a short period of time.
Around that time Kraus was invited to audition for the Assaf Amdursky’s song "Mayan" and immediately, due to her unique interpretation of the song, joined his tour. In 2001, "Mayan" was released on the Amdursky’s album, "Live", and the remix version was released on the Moshik Kop’s album, "Pieces" (M.D.M.A Records).
At 2001, Kraus spent a year in California where she studied traditional Bulgarian signing and classical modern music with avant-garde artist Fred Frith. She then moved to New York, where she began working on her own material, which eventually led to her debut solo album "Boutique".
In 2004, Kraus returned to Israel, and continued collaborating with many different artists. She contributed vocals for "Infectzia" albums ("Kaha Meankim" 2000, "Bekef" 2004) produced by "Rockfour". She recorded vocals for Ivri Lider ("The New People" 2001), and for a movie soundtrack "Ha-Asonot Shel Nina" (2003). She joined Yoni Bloch's live shows and participated in his two albums ("Hergelim Raim" 2007, "Al Mi Ani Oved" 2008). Kraus also joined numerous live performances, such as "Gingiot" , "Girafot", and sang in Tzach Drori ’s Album ("Kivun Hruach" 2010).
During this time, Kraus felt the need to pursue an old passion of hers, Brazilian-Bossa-Nova, which arose during the time she spent at the music school. She fell in love with the delicate complex musical style, and felt that it fitted naturally with her unique voice. Along with producer/musician, Michael Frost, and musician, Noa Golandsky , she assembled "Bussa" and started a long journey that led to a cover version album for classic Israeli songs in a bossa-nova scent; featuring Kraus ’s signature intimate unusual style. The album "Bussa" (N.M.C label, 2008) topped the charts with cover versions for Shoshana Damari’s "Kalaniot" (Anemone), Yehuda Poliker’s "Dvarim shraziti lomar" (things that I wanted to say) and Ishai Levi’s "Rikud Romantic" (Romantic Dance).
Within her various artistic activities, while trying to work on her own music, Kraus was approached by the composer and pianist Roy Yarkoni, who asked her to perform some of his own material in a one time event. Kraus immediately felt the magic, and due to this experience, they decided to form an art-rock group called "Panic Ensemble" (Earsay recordes 2008). The group consists of eight virtuous musicians, and Kraus performs as the lead singer. The band is very much alive, and performs in various venues in Israel. The group was invited to perform in the prestigious "Israel Festival of Jerusalem", and was one of the finalists in the "Independent Music Awards" competition. "Panic Ensemble" was also chosen to perform with artists such as "Faun Fables" and "Jewlia Eisenberg" in their Israeli live shows.
These days, after many years of maturation, Kraus is releasing her debut solo album, titled "Boutique". The album mainly consists of Kraus’s personal creative work, which initially started during her stay in New York City, and was finally finished when she relocated to Israel. Thus, it is highly influenced by the colorful, rich with temptation, vital NYC urban life, which can get distant and lonely at times.
The Album, "Boutique", features Kraus’s fragile and magical voice, which consist of powerful lyrics and strong vocal performances. It has a dash of middle-eastern touch, gentle intimate flair, flirtatious vibe, and arrangements that surround the listener with great fantasy.
"Boutique" was produced by a NYC based composer and pianist, Daniel Koren, who pampered the album with endless sensitivity and creativity. The album was co-composed largely with Ben Handler, and was mixed by Tamir Muskat ("Balkan Beat Box"). |
