God Dethroned listening session report
August 28th, 2004, somewhere in the province of Drenthe

So, what about the new album??

since I hadn▓t eaten since noon that day, I was thrilled to see the guys of the paintball organisation busy with the BBQ when we changed our clothing. What followed was a feast well-deserved after so much killing, dying, sweating, screaming and exhilaration. And all of this accompanied with the sounds of the new God Dethroned album. That▓s what we came for in the first place but being so exhausted; it was hard to concentrate on the music. (Me hungry, me want food!)
But while I was stuffing my stomach with delicious BBQ meat and other BBQ food, I heard the new God Dethroned album twice.

Opening track ⌠Nihilism■ speeds out of the speakers and tickles our weary ears to pay attention. The staccato riffing, blast beating and excellent solos sound like God Dethroned upgraded to a 2004 edition. An excellent way to open the album and to blow some of the sand out of our ears.
⌠Arch Enemy Spain■ kicks off fast but quickly turns into a melodic mid-paced killer track. This tune might cause some serious whiplashes.
The riffing ⌠Sigma enigma■ somehow reminds me of Napalm Death (Diatribes-era) though this is not meant in a negative way. Add to the kick ass riffs the very catchy chorus and we▓ve got ourselves a damn fine track.
I love drummers beating the shit out of their drums and when AriКn starts rumbling at the beginning of ⌠The lair of the white worm■ (based on Bram Stoker▓s book), a grin appears on my weary face. This song turns out to be an excellent fast Slayeresque track with razor sharp riffs and a very cool melodic breakdown in the middle of the song.
⌠Rusty nails■ builds up very slowly which reminds me of ⌠Soul capture 1562■ (Bloody blasphemy-album). This song is well put in the middle of the album to give the listeners a break to catch their breath. Yet, it invites one to bang that head and its chorus will be screamed along at concerts for sure.

Are you ⌠Loyal to the crown of God Detroned■? The band sweeps up the pace with tight and catchy riffing. The blastbeats are cleverly followed by some mid-paced parts making this track very suited for some good old moshing.
There are a lot of rhythm changes in the grooving ⌠Last zip of spit■. The song is mainly mid-paced yet gains speed for a short while towards the end.
The quick break in ⌠The grey race■ might be exemplary of the erratic behavior of the human race. The propeller riffs are very tasty in this one. Interesting to hear that a Slayeresque solo flows into an Arch Enemy alike solo.
Closing an album should be memorable since the recency effect learns us that we remember the things at the end of something the best. The chopping riffs, overall catchiness and increase in speed throughout ⌠Salt in your wounds■ (how appropriate after paintball!) make sure one will push the repeat button instantly.
